A new project for 2002.

I didn't want to dig a huge hole and fill it with 1 cubic yd of concrete for a pier in the event it ever needing to move it !
I opted for steel pier fabricated from 200mm box section with 8mm wall thickness with vertical gussets to provide additional stiffness.
The ribs double the overall stiffness of the pier so are well worth adding. They also support the base and help prevent this from twisting.
An important thing to do when installing a pier on to a flat face is to settle the pier on to 'grout'. This ensures the base plate is fully supported.
The top plate is 300mm diameter and 20mm thick.
A new german equatorial mount is on order so the LX200 will be sold shortly to make way for it and a new OTA.
The top will be finished with an anodised 16mm plate to provide a smooth flat surface to make polar precise alignment adjustments.
Now finished with new mount. See
